Community
Worldwide, many TBAs have lost their essential roles in the community through the medicalisation of birth. However, it is now becoming increasingly recognised that TBAs continue to play an important role providing antenatal care, assistance during labour and delivery, and initial postpartum care in many countries in the global South. TBAs are easy to access in community settings and cost less than other village or government health workers. We believe that widespread acknowledgement of TBAs as crucial to the experience of birthing people everywhere needs to become the norm in the Global North too.
By working in collaboration with other birthworkers, we aim to strengthen our practice; creating resilience by offering emotional as well as practical support to one another. This innately strengthens and enriches the services we can offer to our birthing people. We aim to build a community hub of birthworkers, filled with essential resources and support.
We dream of reclaiming the term ‘Traditional Birth Attendant’ (TBA). The World Health Organisation (WHO) has defined traditional birth attendants as “traditional, independent (of the health system), non-formally trained and community-based providers of care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period
